Nether Portal Calculator for Minecraft

How to use it
- Read your coordinates at the portal: F3 on Java, or turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings on Bedrock.
- Type them into the side you are on, Overworld or Nether. The other side fills in as you type.
- Build the matching portal at the converted X and Z, at the same height if there is room.
- Copy the result with the button to paste into chat or a /tp command, or open the spot on the seed map to see what surrounds it.
Good to know
One block of travel in the Nether covers eight in the Overworld, and only horizontally. That is the whole conversion: X and Z are divided by 8 on the way in and multiplied by 8 on the way out. Height is not scaled.
When you step through a portal, Java takes your converted position and looks for an existing portal around it: up to 128 blocks away in the Overworld, but only 16 in the Nether, across the full height of the dimension. If it finds several, it uses the closest one, measured in three dimensions. If it finds none, it builds a new portal, trying for a clear spot within 16 blocks of the target.
That is where links go wrong. A portal the game builds for you can be up to 16 blocks off, and at a different height, and the trip back is scaled by 8 again, which is enough to land you at a different portal in the Overworld. The fix is to build both sides yourself at the calculated coordinates, which links the pair in both directions.
Known limitations
- The calculator converts coordinates; it can't see your world, so it won't know about an old portal nearby that the game might link to instead.
- Coordinates are rounded down to whole blocks, the way the game places you, so a result can differ by one from a calculator that rounds to the nearest block.
- The search distances quoted on this page are Java rules. The 8 to 1 scale itself is the same on Bedrock.
FAQ
How do I convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates?
Divide X and Z by 8 and keep Y. Overworld X 800, Z -1,600 becomes Nether X 100, Z -200. To go the other way, multiply the Nether X and Z by 8.
Why did my Nether portal link to the wrong portal?
The game links to the closest portal it can find near the converted spot: within 128 blocks in the Overworld and 16 in the Nether on Java. If an older portal is closer than the one you meant, it wins. Build each side at the calculated coordinates and the pair links both ways.
Does Y matter for Nether portal linking?
It is not scaled, but it still counts. Java picks the closest portal in three dimensions, so a portal at a similar height beats one far above or below. The Nether is only 128 blocks tall, so keep the Nether side between its bedrock floor and roof.
Does the Nether portal calculator work for Bedrock?
Yes. The Nether is 8 times smaller than the Overworld on Bedrock too, so the same numbers apply. On both editions, building each portal at the calculated coordinates is what makes a link reliable.
Do I need my seed for this?
No. The conversion works on coordinates alone. Your seed only matters if you want to see what is around the spot: open it on the seed map with the link under the calculator.
