Diamond advice online is mostly out of date. The old "Y=11" answer came from a version where the world stopped at bedrock Y=0. Since the depth extension, diamonds get commoner the deeper you go, and the best layer is far below where most guides send you.
The right depth
Diamond ore now generates from around Y=16 all the way down to the bedrock floor, and its frequency increases as you descend. The densest band sits just above bedrock, around Y=-59 to -54.
Below roughly Y=-60 you start hitting bedrock, which wastes swings. Y=-59 is the usual compromise: maximum ore density with a floor you can still tunnel through cleanly.

Which method is actually fastest
Method matters as much as depth, because exposure per block broken is what you are optimising.
- Branch mining — a 2-block-high corridor with side branches every third block. Reliable and predictable
- Cave and ravine diving — far more blocks exposed per minute, and deep ravines cut straight through the diamond band. Riskier, and you need light and food
- Ancient city exposure — the deep dark sits in the right depth range and its open structures expose a lot of stone. Dangerous if you disturb the Warden
- Avoid 1x1 vertical shafts as a search method — they expose almost nothing per block
Let the seed pick your targets
Ore placement is deterministic, so you do not have to guess where to start. An ore finder reads your seed and hands you coordinates for actual diamond veins, which turns a two-hour strip mine into a walk to a known spot.
This is also how you decide whether a base location is worth it: a spawn with diamond veins and a ravine cutting the right depth nearby is worth more than a prettier one with nothing under it.
Practical kit
- An iron pickaxe minimum — a stone pick will not drop the diamond
- Fortune III roughly doubles your yield; come back with it before clearing big veins
- Water bucket for the lava you will meet at that depth, and torches to stop mobs spawning behind you
- Bring more food than feels necessary: the walk back up is long
