A base location is a resource decision dressed up as an aesthetic one. What matters is what you can reach without travelling: farmland, wood, water, a village to trade with, and a way down to ore. Here is how the biomes actually compare.
The reliably good ones
- Plains — flat to build on, farmland everywhere, and the biome most likely to hold a village. The default right answer
- Forest and birch forest — wood in bulk next to plains, usually with flat patches to build in
- Savanna — flat, open, acacia for building, and villages generate here
- Meadow — beautiful, flat, and sits on mountain slopes so you get altitude and cave access together
- River or coastline anywhere — water for farms, transport, and a landmark to navigate home by
Good with a caveat
- Taiga — spruce, villages, and foxes, but the terrain is lumpier than it looks
- Desert — villages and temples, easy visibility, but no wood and no farmland without hauling water
- Jungle — bamboo, cocoa and jungle temples, but clearing it is slow and navigation is miserable
- Mushroom fields — no hostile mob spawns at all, which is genuinely powerful, but almost no resources on the island
The ones that cost you
These are not unbuildable, they just tax you every session.
- Dark forest — permanently dark enough for mobs to spawn at midday under the canopy
- Swamp — little flat ground, slimes at night, and water you cannot farm on easily
- Deep ocean — everything needs hauling, and drowned make the commute hostile
- Badlands — striking, but no farmland, little wood, and broken terrain to build around
Judge the neighbourhood, not the biome
The best spot is usually a border: plains meeting forest meeting a river gives you farmland, wood and water within a short walk, and border areas also tend to put several biomes’ mobs and resources in reach.
A biome map of your seed shows those borders directly, along with what is nearby — a village to trade with, a ravine for early ore, a monument or mansion to raid later.
Pick the location where the things you will do a hundred times are closest, not the one that looks best in the first screenshot.
FAQ
What is the best biome for a beginner base?
Plains, ideally on a river and next to forest. Flat to build on, farmland ready, wood close, and the biome most likely to have a village.
Are mushroom fields good for a base?
They are uniquely safe — hostile mobs do not spawn there — but the island itself has almost no resources, so everything gets imported.
Which biomes should I avoid building in?
Dark forest (mobs spawn under the canopy in daylight), swamp, deep ocean and badlands. All buildable, all a permanent tax on your time.
