Ancient Cities: How to Find One and Survive It

Ancient cities hold the only source of the Swift Sneak enchantment and some of the best loot in the game, guarded by a mob you cannot reasonably fight. The trick is not combat. It is never letting the Warden arrive.

Where they generate

Ancient cities only appear in the deep dark biome, which forms deep underground, usually under mountainous terrain. They sit low — well below Y=0 — and they are large, so once you are in the right biome the structure is hard to miss.

Because they are tied to a biome that only exists at depth, you cannot find one by surface exploration. This is the structure people most often look up rather than hunt.

Getting there without waking anything

The deep dark has no normal mobs. What it has is sculk sensors and shriekers that listen for you, and four shrieks summon the Warden.

If the Warden does spawn, you are not going to win. Run, or dig up and out, or pearl away — it burrows off again once it loses you.

What the loot is worth

Using the seed to plan the raid

Ancient city placement is deterministic, so a finder can give you the coordinates and let you decide the approach: which side to dig in from, and whether to tunnel in at the city’s own level rather than dropping through the ceiling into a sensor field.

Knowing the location also lets you prepare properly — wool, food, and a way out — instead of discovering the biome by falling into it.

FAQ

What Y level are ancient cities?

Deep below zero, inside the deep dark biome, which forms at depth and often under mountains. They are large structures, so finding the biome is the hard part.

Can you beat the Warden?

Not practically. It hits hard enough to kill through full diamond and has a ranged attack. The intended play is avoidance — crouch, use wool, and never let four shrieks happen.

Is Swift Sneak available anywhere else?

No. Ancient city chests are the only source, which is the main reason to raid one.
