Ocean Monuments: How to Find One and Beat the Guardians

An ocean monument is the only source of sponges and the best early prismarine supply, guarded by Guardians that shoot through water and three Elder Guardians that stop you mining at all. Going in without a plan is how people lose their gear underwater.

Where they generate

Monuments generate in deep ocean biomes, sitting on the sea floor. They are huge and made of prismarine, so from the surface on a clear day you can often see the dark shape below.

Because they need deep ocean, a landlocked spawn can be a long way from one. Placement is deterministic, so this is another structure worth looking up rather than sailing for.

Mining fatigue is the real boss

Each of the three Elder Guardians inflicts Mining Fatigue on you, which makes breaking monument blocks effectively impossible. You cannot tunnel your way through the problem.

Where the loot actually is

Turning it into a farm

Once cleared, the monument keeps spawning ordinary Guardians in its water volume, which makes it the best XP and prismarine farm in the game if you drain or enclose part of it.

Knowing the coordinates in advance lets you plan that build — where to run the drop, which side to drain — rather than improvising underwater.

FAQ

Why can I not break blocks in an ocean monument?

Elder Guardians inflict Mining Fatigue. Milk clears it temporarily, but they reapply it — you have to kill all three.

Do all ocean monuments have sponges?

Most have some, but the large sponge rooms are not guaranteed in every monument.

Where is the treasure in a monument?

Eight gold blocks are hidden in the central room behind dark prismarine, not in chests — monuments have no loot chests.
